Dev't reinvents art deco with hip interiors

Robinsons Residences’ The Sapphire Bloc got its design inspiration from the roaring 20s’ art deco, a symbol of glamour and faith in technological and social progress.

The  four-tower high-rise development in  Ortigas Center in Pasig stands out not only for its enviable location, a vibrant lifestyle hub but also because of its trademark art deco architectural and interior design.

“Our envisioned persona is a young and driven urban sophisticate. So we have choreographed the experience of coming home by reinventing the Art Deco style in the contemporary setting,” said Frenjick Quesada, design principal at the Design Hirayama + Quesada team which included Jobele Tee and Jeri Caingles for The Sapphire Bloc project.

Symmetry, scale and detail all play together to capture residents and guests’ appreciation all the way to the reception area.

“We drew on the design’s principles, particularly that of symmetry, to create a grand and genteel atmosphere. In making the space dynamic and expressive, we used lighting fixtures, such as the grand chandelier, in larger than life scale,” Quesada said.

To depict the movement accurately, Quesada’s team referred to books, vintage textiles and old world photographs to fully grasp the elements. “We toured local art deco buildings in Manila to have firsthand experience of how it felt to be in such an old world glamorous space.  We soaked ourselves in special places where the materials are metallic and shiny, juxtaposed with pattern and sunburst forms and ornamentations. We translated elements into simpler ones but unmistakeably rich and opulent.”

“Our challenge was to come up with a space that ultimately felt current and forward looking,” said Quesada.

This was achieved by mixing contemporary choices to complement the classic elements. The development design bear neutral hues with a punch of sapphire blue; a modern drop light hung overhead for practicality and to enhance the modern appeal. There is also a mezzanine which is a transition space towards the premium amenities of the condominium and where residents and guests lounge and wait for each other amidst interesting art pieces.

Aside from its architecture and interiors, the development’s added measures of value make it an ideal investment that is sure to appreciate in time. Its prime location easily connects it to three of Metro Manila’s major cities, it has efficiently-designed and quality crafted units, and features that minimize environmental footprint like the use of solar-powered LED lights at the outdoor amenities. Its 8,000 square meter retail strip boasts of a diverse array of merchants and restaurants that redefines destination dining in the metro.
